Much as we would love to care for wombats, sadly there aren’t any wombats remaining in the Northern Rivers area of NSW, where Araucaria Wildlife Sanctuary is located.
However, with input from Jiggi Landcare Brainstrust we have identified that we do have a Wombat Berry Vine (Eustrephus latifolius). It doesn’t romp and play as much as a marsupial wombat, but birds like the berries, and the tuberous roots are apparently eaten by creatures (such as wombats). Maybe our local bandicoots might have a nibble sometimes!
